Customers who qualify for retired status registration pay a $10 per year processing fee instead of the full registration renewal fee. To find out if you qualify for retired status registration, please refer to our "Retired Status Fact Sheet" (PDF).

To get your Texas license plates and registration sticker, visit your local county tax-assessor collector office. You will need your insurance card, the Vehicle Inspection Report issued by the inspection station, and proof that you own the vehicle such as the registration or title from your previous state. You may also show a current foreign/military ownership document or foreign evidence of ownership.
Your vehicle registration may be renewed online 90 days prior to the expiration date or 12 months after the expiration date if you have not received a citation for an expired registration. Your expiration month will not change.
Your vehicle registration sticker displays your license plate number, county of registration and partial vehicle identification number. This customization helps protect you against theft and fraud. Registration expires on the last day of the month shown on your sticker. For example, if your sticker shows a date of 12/23, your registration is valid through the last day of December 2023.
Some counties offer renewals at substations and subcontractors, such as a participating grocery store. If you are renewing your registration at a county subcontractor location, such as your local grocery store, they may not accept your VIR as proof of inspection. Each county determines whether their subcontractors can verify inspection manually with a VIR. If a subcontractor is not permitted to verify by VIR, you will be directed to the county tax office to complete your renewal.
All registration renewal notices will include line items for the following fees and donation opportunities. The fee amounts displayed here are for demonstration purposes only. Fee amounts will vary based on your vehicle type, county of registration, and county of inspection.
All counties may charge a fee of up to $10 for deposit into their county road and bridge fund. Certain counties are permitted to assess an additional fee for transportation not to exceed $20 to fund long-term transportation projects in the county. All counties may also assess a child safety fee of up to $1.50 to promote child safety programs including health and nutrition education and school crossing guards. Processing and Handling Fee: The processing and handling fee covers the costs of processing vehicle registration. These costs include state and county services; creation of annual renewal notices; registration stickers; and other related services and materials.
The registration fee is based on weight for cars and trucks, including motor homes. For more information, contact your local county tax assessor-collector office. Proof of liability insurance and inspection is required to register your vehicle.
It is important to update your address on your motor vehicle record. Updating your address will help ensure you receive your registration renewal notice. Failure to renew your registration is against the law and may result in a fine.
Effective July 1, 2022, individuals who have registration stops associated with toll violations are prohibited from renewing their registration or replacing their license plates until satisfying toll violations.
To renew a registration online, the customer must provide personal identifying information of the owner of the vehicle and/or vessel to log in and complete the transaction. If FLHSMV is unable to verify valid insurance on the vehicle or vessel, no registration will be issued.
To renew a registration via mobile app, the customer must provide the license plate or vehicle identification number (VIN) or hull identification number (HIN) for the vehicle and/or vessel they seek to register to complete the transaction. If FLHSMV is unable to verify valid insurance on the vehicle or vessel, no registration will be issued.
MyFlorida is available on all mobile devices and allows customers to securely renew a registration on an eligible vehicle or vessel. Customers will receive a digital document to use until the registration arrives in the mail. A $4.00 processing fee is applied to each transaction for customers paying with credit card, or $3.75 for transactions paid through checking account.
Under certain circumstances, an individual may not be able to register a vehicle. These are referred to as registration stops, or "blocks." Please review the list of registration stops and take the required steps to clear them before continuing.
Although an individual can legally operate their vehicle up to 15 days after their registration expires ("valid through" date), the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicle charges a late fee up to $25 on all registration renewals paid after the license plate's expiration date.
To avoid a penalty fee your online or phone renewal must be completed on or before the due date or your mail-in payment must be postmarked by the due date. The initial fee for a late registration is $8, plus an additional $4 for each month it's overdue.
Registration renewal reminders are mailed or emailed to the owner of record 45 days prior to expiration. You are responsible for renewing your registration by the due date whether or not you receive this courtesy notice. Your expiration date is printed on your registration document.
If your vehicle fails the initial or any subsequent emissions test, you will not be charged a penalty fee for late registration renewal if the original test was before the registration expiration date and the registration renewal is completed within 30 days of the original test.
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for the emissions testing program and laws. For convenience and ease of future renewals, customers should perform required emissions testing at the same time of registration renewal so the cycles for each are similar. You do not have to maintain a registration or liability insurance if your vehicle is in storage or otherwise not being driven on public streets. You must surrender the license plates if you drop the liability insurance for any reason.
Trailers are exempt from insurance, odometer and smog requirements but are otherwise registered and titled in the same manner as motor vehicles. See Nevada Dealer Sales, Out-of-State Dealer Sales or Private Party Sales. They are not eligible for online registration.
All-terrain vehicles, pocket bikes, motorized scooters, snowmobiles and similar motorized vehicles are subject to registration and titling in Nevada. Nearly all OHVs 1976 and newer must be registered.
If you are completing any of the above transactions (new, renew, or amend a registration), you may also transfer a license plate from a vehicle that you own or have sold/disposed of to a different vehicle that you own or have newly acquired/purchased. Only the following license plates may be transferred online at mybmv.com: Passenger, Truck (11,000 pounds or less), Motorcycle, and In God We Trust, but please be advised that there may be specific scenarios where you cannot transfer online and must visit a branch to transfer your plate.
Vehicles driven in New York must have a valid, unexpired registration. Your 'registration' is the sticker placed on your windshield and the paper registration certificate that you must keep in your vehicle. Renewing online is fast and easy.
If the title is being held electronically by another state, the current valid registration receipt from the state in which the vehicle was last registered will be used as proof of ownership for accepting the application for title and registration. The Titles and Registrations Bureau will correspond with the lienholder and/or the other state to request the title be surrendered to the Kansas Division of Vehicles. If the title is not surrendered, the applicant and the lienholder or leasing company will need to work out a way for the title to be surrendered, or the registration will not be renewed. The vehicle cannot be operated without valid/current registration.
You will receive a renewal notice from DC DMV 60 calendar days before your current vehicle registration expires. You will receive your renewal notice by email if you have provided DC DMV with your email address. Your vehicle must have a valid inspection sticker to renew the vehicle registration. Also, to renew your vehicle registration, all outstanding debt to the District of Columbia must be paid.
If your vehicle inspection and registration stickers are expired, DC DMV will issue you a 5-day temporary registration. You must have your vehicle inspected before the 5-day temporary registration expires. Once it expires, you will not be issued another one. This is a one time only option per vehicle. The 5-day temporary registration may be obtained in-person at a DC DMV Service Center.
Note: If you have a change of address or a name change, you cannot renew your registration by mail however, we are working to bring back this online enhancement. If your driver license or identification card was issued prior to May 1, 2014, you must update your address in-person at a DC DMV Service Center. Also, if you have received a temporary registration, then renew it online for it to become your valid permanent registration. You have the option to renew it for one or two years.
